Detection in elevator pits

NFPA 72 requires detectors to be installed in some elevator pits and also specifies that these detectors be accessible for testing and maintenance which presumably means you can test the detector without taking the elevator out of service.

Any suggestions how you would achieve this requirement?  In particular, what if a detector is located in an elevator pit?  How can this be made accessible?

NFPA 72 2019 says:

21.3.7*  ...    Fire alarm inititiating device(s) required to be installed inside an elevator hoistway ... shall be required to be accessible for service, testing and maintenance.

(2)  Where sprinklers are located at the bottom of the hoistway (the pit), fire detection devices shall be installed in the pit..
